Stuck in traffic? There’s something you can do about it- and it isn’t abandoning your car and sprinting away to start a new life in the desert. These tips only work if we ALL do them. So spread the word! Pick a lane and stay in it. Studies have found that switching back and forth isn't only dangerous- it actually isn't any faster than just staying in one lane. Some jams aren’t caused by wrecks or construction, but by drivers who speed up and then hit the breaks. The car behind them brakes, then the next one brakes, and so on for miles until traffic is barely moving. Pace yourself so you don’t have to brake all the time.
Do you know how to "zipper" in traffic? When 2 lanes merge into one, instead of bunching up to not let people in, cars should use both lanes evenly, and then take turns where the lanes meet. It’s the nicest AND most efficient way to deal with a bottleneck- but only if everyone knows what to do. Spread the word! It’s better than sending everyone back to Drivers’ Ed.
